Snow Survey Results for March 8, 2010

Mar 08, 2010 -

The North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority (NBMCA) released the current snow pack information for the North Bay area today as part of the NBMCA’s Flood Forecasting and Warning Program.

"The recent warm and sunny days have helped reduce the snow depth in the area, however the water content in the snow in the snow pack is above normal for this time of year", explains Susan Brownlee, Regulations Officer of the NBMCA.  "The extent and speed of runoff will largely depend on the amount of warm spring rain, sunlight and wind we receive as well as the daytime and nighttime temperatures."

The NBMCA will continue with weekly monitoring of the snow pack throughout the remainder of spring 2010.   Ten samples are taken at each site and the results are reported as "average" depths and water equivalence below:

Northeast Mental Health Centre

Corbeil Conservation Area

Shirley Skinner Conservation Area

The Shirley Skinner Conservation Area near Powassan was added as an NBMCA snow monitoring station in 2007 in order to better understand the Wasi watershed and better represent the entire NBMCA jurisdiction. As the NBMCA has less than five years of data at this location, no comparisons can be calculated at this time.

The North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority (NBMCA) was founded in 1972 by the Province of Ontario and the NBMCA’s 10 member municipalities. A non-profit organization, the NBMCA works closely with the public to balance human need with the environmental needs of the region's watershed.  The NBMCA is one 36 Conservation Authorities who are memebers of Conservation Ontario.
