Ken Adams Memorial Award
(Annual event – February)

The Ken Adams Memorial Award was created by the North Bay – Mattawa Conservation Authority (NBMCA) as part of the scholarship/ bursary program at Nipissing University.  The award is presented annually to a student in good academic standing in an environmental concentration. The student must also have demonstrated a commitment to the conservation of the local natural environment and be deemed most deserving by the faculty of Nipissing University’s division of Geography & Science.

The annual award is named for Ken Adams, who helped found the Conservation Authority in 1972 and who served as the NBMCA representative for Calvin Township for 20 years.  He was elected Vice-Chair of the NBMCA in 1979 and held that post for 13 years.  Ken was committed to the work of the NBMCA and its community-based efforts to protect the local natural environment.

Dorothy Walford Memorial Award
(Annual event – December)

The Dorothy Walford Memorial Award is presented in recognition of significant and valuable contribution through word, thought, effort or deed to the conservation, preservation or enhancement of the natural environment. It is awarded annually to acknowledge a local individual, or group for their involvement in a worthy environmental project.

The award was created by Pollution Probe of North Bay in 1971.  It was named in memory of Dorothy Walford, a local conservationist dedicated to increasing environmental consciousness.  In 1976, the North Bay - Mattawa Conservation Authority assumed responsibility for selecting recipients and retaining the high standards associated with this environmental award.

Ward Smith Environmental Youth Award
(Annual event – December)

The Ward Smith Environmental Youth Award is presented as a token of appreciation for youth interest and involvement in the protection, improvement and/ or conservation of the local natural environment. It is awarded annually to recognize a youth group or organization for their contributions to the local environment through awareness and action.

The award was established by the North Bay - Mattawa Conservation Authority in 1993 as a companion award to the Dorothy Walford Memorial Award.  It has been named to pay tribute to Ward Smith, Chairman of the North Bay - Mattawa Conservation Authority from 1978 through 1991. Ward Smith strongly believed in environmental education and the promise of youth.




Nominations for the Dorothy Walford or the Ward Smith
award must be recieved at the NBMCA by:

October 23rd at 5:00 pm.
