Sewage Systems

In the 1970s, the responsibility for overseeing the installation of sewage systems was transferred from the Ministry of Health to the Ministry of Environment.  Afterwards, regulations governing private sewage systems were then transferred from the Ministry of Environment to the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing and subsequently incorporated into the Ontario Building Code (OBC – 1997).  The North Bay – Mattawa Conservation Authority was designated under the OBC to conduct inspections and issue sewage system permits across the Nipissing District and defined areas within the Parry Sound District.

The North Bay – Mattawa Conservation Authority’s Sewage System Program is designed to regulate and ensure compliance with the OBC regarding the installation and maintenance of private onsite sewage systems. Please see the Caring for your Sewage System link for information on proper maintenance of sewage systems.

The NBMCA provides a variety of services related to sewage disposal systems including:
  • Plan Input and Review
  • Issuing Sewage System Permits
  • Site Inspections related to site suitability for a sewage system, consent and sub-division applications, and/or expansions or renovations to existing structures
  • Complaint investigations regarding poorly maintained sewage systems
  • File reviews and Legal Inquiries
  • Re-inspection Programs
Permit applications can be downloaded online, and are available at both the North Bay and Parry Sound NBMCA offices in addition to Township and Municipal offices.

Please note that NBMCA staff members are not permitted to assist applicants with design specifications regarding Sewage System Permit Applications.  Please contact a licensed sewage system designer / installer (found in local Yellow Pages) or the Ontario Building Code for further information.
