Conservation Areas near Highway 17 Conservation Areas & Trails
There are numerous conservation areas located along Highway 17. The Eau Claire Gorge is the NBMCA's flagship Conservation Area and features a spectacular waterfall along an interpretive trail that details the area's rich logging history. Meanwhile, Mattawa Island Conservation Area is an ideal family spot to spend an afternoon picnicking, swimming and lying on the beach. Continuing further to Papineau Lake Conservation Area, boating enthusiasts will find a boat launch and a crisp Northern Ontario lake ideal for fishing year round.
The Shields-McLaren Conservation Areas is maintained as a nature preserve and as such, does not contain any facilities or marked hiking trails. Orienteering experience is a necessity to navigate the land and those wishing to explore the NBMCA's nature preserves are encouraged to contact the NBMCA for further information.
